Reflection’s on the past helps paint the outlook on the future, hope you like this one.
In the tapestry of life, every thread, no matter how rugged, contributes to the strength and beauty of the final picture. My journey, marked by challenges and triumphs, is a testament to this truth. Growing up in a broken home, I was precariously close to becoming just another statistic, a narrative all too common in turbulent environments.
The Early Years: A Struggle for Identity and Direction
From the very start, my life was a canvas of chaos. My parents, living in different parts of the country, were more like passing ships than a united front. This fragmented upbringing saw me shuttling between homes until the age of eight, when I found myself in a women’s abuse shelter with my mother, battling a severe case of what I recall as Salmonella. The absence of a stable, nurturing environment during these formative years left a void, a yearning for something I couldn’t quite grasp.
The turning point came in my teenage years. Following a brief stint as a runaway and a near-miss with juvenile detention for selling marijuana at school, my life was on the brink of taking a darker turn. But life has its way of presenting us with angels in disguise. For me, it was a mentor who stepped in at this critical juncture. This figure, whose belief in my potential was unwavering, advocated for me and steered me away from the path leading to juvenile detention. He provided the mentorship and guidance I desperately needed while on the Delayed Entry Program (DEP) for nearly a year. This experience was my first real glimpse into what it means to have direction and purpose.
The Military Years: Finding Purpose and Direction
Joining the Navy, I embarked on a 20-year journey that not only shaped my character but also gave me a sense of belonging and purpose. However, this path wasn’t without its own set of challenges. Being deployed or away for the majority of the time meant I missed out on crucial years of fatherhood. Retirement brought with it a new role – a full-time father to my then 7 and 8-year-old children, a role I had no prior example to follow.
The military life, with its demands and uncertainties, also influenced my approach to personal commitments. My wife and I have been together for 20 years, a testament to patience and enduring love. However, it wasn’t until 2011 that we solidified our bond through marriage. This delay in commitment was in part a reflection of the complexities and challenges of military life, shaping my understanding and readiness for such a lifelong commitment.
Breaking the Cycle: From Past Hauntings to Present Healing
The shadow of my past, particularly the fear of repeating a cycle of a broken home, often haunted me. The memory of my parents’ dysfunctional relationship and the consequent turmoil was a ghost lurking in the corners of my newfound family life. However, I learned that acknowledging these fears was the first step towards healing and breaking the cycle.
Reflections from the Back Deck
Now, as I stand on the back deck of the home I own, watching my children play, I am filled with gratitude. Celebrating 20 years together with my wife, with whom I plan on traveling the world with has already been been on a journey of growth, understanding, and profound love with me this whole time. The military life taught me valuable lessons about dedication and the importance of timing, and these lessons have been integral to the success and longevity of our marriage. Let me be clear it is not perfect, we work on it together.
Closing Thoughts: A Message of Hope and Resilience
If there’s anything my journey has taught me, it’s that no matter how dire your beginnings, there’s always a path to a better life. It requires courage, faith, and the willingness to break free from negative environments and embrace the possibilities of change and growth. Remember, God is great, and He loves you. Care for yourself first, so you can extend that care to others.
My story is one of overcoming adversity, embracing change, and finding fulfillment in both personal and professional realms. It’s a narrative that speaks to the power of transformation and the importance of taking the time to find and commit to what truly matters in life. I am not alone in this, please share your story of over coming and together lets overcome our past into the future.
