I find my self Reflecting on my service quite often I hope this makes sense to you…
In our relentless pursuit of making others happy, it’s easy to lose sight of our own needs and happiness. This is a lesson I learned firsthand during my 20 years of service in the Navy, especially when I was working as a First Class Petty Officer (FCPO) E-6. My initial focus was solely on improving programs, supporting my sailors, and enhancing the overall effectiveness of the command. However, in doing so, I neglected my own health and well-being.
I vividly recall a turning point during my deployment. After days of being bedridden due to illness, caused by overextending myself, I realized the crucial need to invest in my personal development. The key was in prioritizing my health, particularly through regular workouts. This shift not only made me happier but also brought more fulfillment and clarity to my professional life. I became more focused, less anxious, and able to manage overwhelming tasks with greater ease.
By the end of that tour, I had achieved remarkable milestones, often reserved for higher ranks. I became a qualified production controller, a Collateral Duty Inspector, and even a Quality Assurance Representative (QAR) – a rare feat for someone in an administrative rate. Additionally, I led the ship’s firefighting training, a role typically held by someone of a higher rank. These achievements were possible due to two key factors: the belief people had in me and, importantly, the care I took for myself before extending it to others. This approach enabled me to gain these qualifications and subsequently help others to achieve theirs.
Through these experiences, I’ve distilled several steps essential for nurturing personal happiness:
- Prioritize Sleep: Adequate rest is fundamental for health and mental clarity.
- Break a Sweat: Physical activity is not only a stress reliever but also enhances focus and well-being.
- Write Down Your Goals: Articulate your aspirations to give them life and direction.
- Create a Supportive Environment: Surround yourself with people and things that inspire and uplift you.
- Laugh and Love: Embrace joy and nurture loving relationships.
- Guard Your Time: Use your time wisely, it’s a non-renewable resource.
- Invest in Your Dreams: Turn your aspirations into actionable goals.
In conclusion, while dedicating ourselves to others is commendable, it’s equally important to prioritize our own happiness. By finding this balance, we not only enhance our own lives but also bring our best selves to those around us.
