August 2024 Veteran News: Decline in Homeless Veterans, FourBlock, Expanding Medical Education and Guidel Olivas Transition Journey
Welcome back to the Mil2Vet news thread, where we keep you updated on the latest news and resources available for our veterans. This week, we have three important stories to share that every veteran should know about:

Significant Decline in Veteran Homelessness
The number of homeless veterans in the United States has seen a remarkable decline, dropping by over 50% since 2010. This decline is a testament to the collaborative efforts between the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), federal and state agencies, nonprofit organizations, and community groups dedicated to ending veteran homelessness.
“This reduction is not just a statistic; it’s a reflection of the tireless work done by so many across the country to ensure that no veteran is left without a home,” said VA Secretary Denis McDonough. “We’re committed to continuing this fight until every veteran has a safe and stable place to live.”
In 2010, the number of homeless veterans was estimated at around 74,000. By 2024, that number has dropped to just over 33,000, according to the latest data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The progress is evident in the annual HUD Point-in-Time (PIT) count, which has shown a steady year-over-year decline:
- 2010: 74,087 homeless veterans
- 2012: 62,619 homeless veterans
- 2014: 49,933 homeless veterans
- 2016: 39,471 homeless veterans
- 2018: 37,878 homeless veterans
- 2020: 37,252 homeless veterans
- 2022: 33,129 homeless veterans
- 2024: 33,000+ homeless veterans (estimated)
Despite this progress, challenges remain, particularly in regions with high housing costs and limited affordable housing options. The VA continues to expand its efforts, offering programs like the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) and the HUD-VASH program, which combines HUD housing vouchers with VA supportive services.

FourBlock: Maximize Your Career Potential
Transitioning service members and veterans often face challenges when entering the civilian workforce. To address these challenges, the VA has highlighted FourBlock, a nonprofit organization that offers career readiness programs specifically designed to help veterans build meaningful careers.
“FourBlock is more than just a career transition program; it’s a community of veterans and professionals dedicated to empowering each other,” said Mike Abrams, founder of FourBlock. “We’re here to ensure that veterans have the tools, network, and support they need to succeed in their civilian careers.”
FourBlock offers both in-person and online programming, including its flagship Veteran Career Readiness Program, which provides one-on-one coaching, expert guidance, and connections to potential employers. Participants develop a customized, actionable career search strategy and gain access to a nationwide network of veterans and employers.
The program is available in select cities across the country and online, making it accessible to veterans regardless of location. “What should I do next?” is the question FourBlock helps veterans answer with confidence.

New VA Graduate Medical Education Initiative
The VA has announced a new initiative aimed at expanding healthcare access for veterans by increasing the number of healthcare providers in underserved areas. The Graduate Medical Education (GME) initiative is now accepting proposals from institutions that are interested in training healthcare professionals to serve in rural and underserved communities.
“Veterans in rural areas deserve the same level of care as those in urban centers,” said VA Under Secretary for Health Dr. Shereef Elnahal. “This initiative will help bridge the gap by bringing more healthcare providers to the areas that need them most.”
The GME initiative is part of the VA’s broader strategy to address the healthcare needs of veterans in underserved regions, where access to care can be limited. By training more healthcare professionals in these areas, the VA hopes to improve access to services such as primary care, mental health care, and specialty care.
This initiative is expected to have a significant impact on the quality of care available to veterans, particularly in rural areas where provider shortages have been a long-standing challenge.
Institutions interested in participating can find more information in the VA’s press release.
