New Veteran Housing in West LA
Exciting news for veterans in Los Angeles! The West Los Angeles VA campus has commenced construction on two new housing projects, set to provide 87 new units specifically for veterans. This groundbreaking event took place at the end of May and is part of a more extensive plan to develop over 1,000 new homes for veterans on the 80-acre North Campus.
These projects aim to create the largest veteran housing community in the nation, providing much-needed support and accommodation for veterans in need. The initiative is a significant step towards addressing the housing crisis among veterans and ensuring they have a safe and supportive environment to call home.

Nebraska’s New Law to Keep Veterans Out of Jail
Nebraska is leading the way with a pioneering new law designed to help at-risk veterans avoid incarceration. Signed by Governor Jim Pillen in April, this legislation makes judicial diversion available for some veterans, offering them the assistance they need instead of jail time.
This initiative is the first of its kind in the nation and is based on recommendations from the Veterans Justice Commission, co-chaired by former U.S. Senator from Nebraska and former Pentagon Chief Chuck Hagel. The law is already being seen as a model that other states may follow, providing a proactive approach to supporting veterans who find themselves in legal trouble due to underlying issues such as PTSD or substance abuse.

Service Dogs Easing PTSD Symptoms
A recent study has highlighted the significant benefits that specially trained service dogs provide in easing PTSD symptoms for U.S. military veterans. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers a pilot program that includes the provision of service dogs for veterans diagnosed with PTSD, in addition to existing therapies such as talk therapy and medications.
These service dogs are trained to assist with various tasks, providing emotional support and helping to manage PTSD symptoms. The VA covers some costs associated with having a service dog, making this a valuable resource for eligible veterans. The study’s findings could help expand the availability of service dogs to more veterans in need.
